What could possibly go wrong?

“The system design did not include a consideration for jaywalking pedestrians.”

– NTSB’s Vehicle Automation Report, explaining that the software inside the Uber self-driving SUV that killed an Arizona woman last year was not designed to detect pedestrians outside of a crosswalk.

Thanks to my brother Bill for bringing this to my attention. For Wired's in-depth story on this, go here. It seems both Uber and Boeing don't seem to get the idea that human beings don't always react the way you expect they will. This is the reason why I don't think a self-driving car could ever make a left turn in traffic safely.
